It would seem that New Thought leaders would overwhelmingly agree about the importance of human rights, upholding the UDHR and the dignity of humanity, yet not even this is held in universal esteem. Some ministers are ignorant of the other denominations in their own movement, so ignorance in other areas should not be a resaon for condemnation.
New Thought, which holds that a person's evolving consciousness is outpictured in that person's world through the transformation of his or her beliefs is dependent upon basic freedom for its public expression as a spiritual choice. The right to Freedom of Thought is not a belief held in common by all people. There are fundamentalists of some faiths who do not believe in a person's right to freedom of religion much less in freedom of conscience or the right to change one's beliefs. In many cases fundamentalists deny evolution of all kinds both spiritual and biological attributing the bones of dinosaurs to the "work of the devil." There some faiths that believe that to change ones' beliefs should carry the penalty of death. Since New Thought upholds the freedom of individuals to change their thinking, it could be transdenominational, but since it has a root belief that to "change your thinking, changes your life," then it might in fact be in opposition to those who believe that changing your thinking, or beliefs is "apostasy."New Thought is made up of people, therefore divisions and differences are part of the process and reality of New Thought, just as they are part of the process and reality of all groups of free people. This is how all great religions have grown over the years and the centuries. Not through forced Unity but rather through a process that some might say mimics biology.
Over the years, the list of New Thought denominations has grown. In some cases some organizations have come along then vanished; others have evolved and remain. Some of the old organizations went through deep crises due to internal corruption, resulting in lost land and funding, followed by a scramble to find a new home. Their own New Thought teachings could lead them to the realization that these problems were (let us place this is the past tense) rooted in the collective consciousness of that organization. Some organizations demonstrate a failure to embody any form of ethical standards, relying on old biblical phrases such as "it is done unto you as you believe", as a way to excuse conduct and avoid responsibility.
Thus one can understand when these organizations have difficulties with internal corruption or when their schools turn out ministers with degrees in consciousness and a lock of conscience. Most of the magazines within the movement do not tackle any of the challenges, or ask important questions but are instead simply preaching to the choir.
In the face of being compared with Scientology, New Thought organizations have reinvented themselves, seeking out consultants and busying themselves with "branding" their particular form of New Thought. This includes: "monetizing" their "products", seeking new "streams" of income, and of course working to build new pyramid structures that will serve their interests.
Thus even as they struggle against being identified with Scientology are they in fact becoming more like it? It is possible to engage Buddhists to do one's branding and trust in the Dharma to work out the details, but what happens if the person doing the branding has a sense of humour? Global Citizens will note that "branding" is a Yankee concept born of a culture that has lost the understanding that democracies and republics are in fact political concepts, whereas capitalism is an economic one.
It would probably surprise many of these proponents of branding to learn that to share New Thought outside of North America one must focus on healing and relationships. Global Citizens often draw attention to the fact that North Americans tend to look to economics as a panacea for all, when it is only a factor. Many souls have discovered that whereas in days past, the U. S. was a wealthy nation, today it is simply a nation which has some wealthy people, decaying infrastructure and a lot of churches, guns and fast food. The last two items can be branded, but what about the others?
Can all things be "branded?" And it is this wise? Contrasting the old dogs who are struggling to learn new habits are the new denominations who are learning the ways of beaurocracy and seeking to avoid the traps that seem to be so much a part of large organizations. Will they succeed? There is also a robust independent movement with growing networks of New Thought Ministers linking up around the world.
After 1. 00 years of little or slow growth percentage wise, we may be seeing real growth in New Thought through these independents. Can the older denominations brand themselves back into expansion? The state of New Thought in 2. Is this the results of branding, or simply not Walking the Talk? New denominations have started and are growing outside of the United States and Japan. Denominations which are rooted in other continents and countries may be better suited to serve the interests of the constituents of those areas and this could result in a truly international movement. Long ago, in the beginning of New Thought, it was an international movement, but world war and the deprivation of human rights for entire populations brought that to an end, isolating New Thought for a time to North America.
